Round mail from April 4, 2001:

Dear colleagues,

this mail serves three purposes:

  1. Making a first inofficial announcement for the 11th International Biennial Conference on Physics of Estuaries and Coastal Seas (PECS), which will be hosted in Hamburg, Germany from September 17-20, 2002. A preliminary PECS 2002 web site can be found at http://2002.pecs-conference.org. An official announcement based on a hopefully nicer web site will be sent around within the next two months.
  2. Testing a new mailing list for the PECS 2002 conference. Please reply to this mail, if you know colleagues who want to be added to the list or in case you want your email address be changed or removed from the list.
  3. Announcing a new international oceanographic journal, of which a special issue will probably serve for publishing papers presented at the PECS 2002 conference: Ocean Dynamics (OD) published by Springer. Chief-Editor is Jörg-Olaf Wolff from the University of Oldenburg in Germany, the Editorial Board consists of active oceanographers from all around the globe. Ocean Dynamics is an international journal that aims to publish high-quality peer-reviewed articles in the following areas of research
    • Theoretical oceanography (new theoretical concepts with a strong view to applicability for operational or monitoring purposes)
    • Computational oceanography (all aspects of ocean modelling and data analysis)
    • Observational oceanography (new techniques or systematic approaches in measuring oceanic variables, including all aspects of monitoring the state of the ocean)
    • Articles with an interdisciplinary character that encompass research in the fields of biological, chemical and physical oceanography are especially encouraged. Manuscripts will be submitted in electronic form as postscript or pdf-files. Templates for Word or LaTeX are available. Electronic supplementary material such as large data sets or animations can be submitted additionally for the electronic edition of the journal. As one of the editors of Ocean Dynamics I would like to encourage you to support this new scientific journal and submit your high quality and innovative manuscripts to the Chief-Editor or any other editor of your choice. You will find their names and addresses and further information on the web pages of Ocean Dynamics.

With kind regards also in the name of the editorial board of Ocean Dynamics,

Yours Hans Burchard.

Round mail from September 7, 2001:

Dear colleagues,

this is the second announcement for the 11th International Biennial Conference on Physics of Estuaries and Coastal Seas (PECS'02), organised in the City of Hamburg from September 17-20, 2002. This will probably also be the last mail sent to this extensive mailing list representing about 550 scientists interested in the physics of estuaries, coastal seas and shelf seas.

We have now updated the home page of the PECS'02 Conference which you will find at http://2002.pecs-conference.org . Since all necessary information about the PECS'02 Conference is given there, I am listing here just the essentials:

  • The deadline for abstract submission and pre-registration is December 31, 2001.
  • Notes of acceptance will be sent out before March 31, 2002.
  • The conference fee will be EUR 250, which includes all meals, coffee breaks, ice breaker party, excursion, conference dinner, local public transportation, a volume with extended abstracts and proceedings.
  • All participants will stay at the same hotel, reservations have to be made by the participants before August 5, 2002.
  • We will be able to give some financial support to participants with limited financial resources, specifically to encourage the participation of scientists from developing countries. Applications for grants have to sent in before April 30, 2002.

Please follow the instructions given on the web pages as closely as possible. This will greatly support our efforts in efficiently organising the conference. And please report any problems with these web pages to Hans Burchard.

Please circulate this mail to your colleagues potentially interested in the PECS'02 conference. We are looking forward to receive your abstracts and to see you in Hamburg in about one years time.

All the best and Tschüß from Hamburg,

Hans Burchard, on behalf of the PECS'02 organisers.

Round mail from November 8, 2001:

Dear colleagues,

in contradiction to our last round mail to the PECS-community, we decided to send another last round mail. This is to inform you that we finally managed to install a web-based tool for pre-registration and abstract submission for the 11th Biennial Conference on Physics of Estuaries and Coastal Seas, which will take place in Hamburg, Germany, from September 17-20, 2002. For this, we appreciated very much the help from the Institute for Science Networking in Oldenburg, Germany.

This means that pre-registeration can start now ! You may pre-register with or without submitting an abstract. Example abstracts are given in LaTeX and WinWord. Please note that pre-registration before December 31, 2001 is a requirement for participation in the PECS-Conference.

All other information is given on the PECS 2002 home page.

Please feel free to send an email to one of the PECS-organisers if you have any questions.

We are looking forward to receiving your abstracts.

Kind regards,

Hans Burchard, on behalf of the PECS'02 Team.

Round mail from May 3, 2002:

Dear pre-registered PECS participant,

this mail informs briefly about the next steps towards the PECS Conference 2002, to be helt in Hamburg, Germany from September 17-20. More informations are given on the PECS Homepage.

  1. The registration procedure ends on June 30. Those with accepted oral or poster presentations need to send an extended abstract to the local organisers, for inclusion into the volume of extended abstracts to be distributed at the beginning of the Conference. For the extended abstracts, please follow the instructions given here. Those who are pre-registered but did not send an abstract register by sending an informal email to Iris Grabemann.
  2. The registration fee of EUR 250 may be paid in advance via bank transfer or on site in cash (Euro only) or by credit card. For further information, click here.
  3. The hotel booking procedure has started now and will be open until August 5. All participants stay at special rates in the Hotel Hafen Hamburg, prices for single rooms vary from EUR 70 to EUR 90. For fax forms and further information, click here.
  4. An alphabetical list of all accepted abstracts can be downloaded as pdf-file here. Please check if your abstract is correctly listed.
  5. It should be noted already now, that we intend a fast publication of PECS papers in a special PECS issue of the Springer Journal Ocean Dynamics. The deadline for full paper submissions will be November 1, 2002. Manuscripts arriving later cannot be considered for the special issue, but will be send to Ocean Dynamics as normal manuscripts (with the note "Presented at the PECS 2002 Conference"). The intended publication date of the special issue will be autumn 2003. For the special issue, no difference will be made for oral and poster presentations.
Please consider the PECS Conference as an informal meeting of scientists interested in the physics of estuaries and coastal seas. Also we, the local PECS organisers are such easy and informal people rather than professional conference organisers. We do our best to cope with the flood of about 200 abstracts and more than 20 grant applications, but we do make mistakes. Please write us an email in case of any problems. We are looking forward to see you all in Hamburg in about 4 1/2 months.

Kind regards, on behalf of the PECS 2002 Organisers,

Hans Burchard.

Round mail from June 4, 2002:

Dear PECS participants,

some of you might have already noticed that the word template for the extended abstract given on the PECS-website does not properly work (I am grateful to Paula Freire and Andre Fortunato for sending me a message concerning these problems). I have therefore prepared a word example and a LaTeX example of such an extended abstract (2 pages in the example, but 4 pages are recommended). Please use these example files and prepare your abstract accordingly. They can be accessed through the submisison site at http://2002.pecs-conference.org/submission.html.

Please note that June 30 is the (hard) deadline for registration and the submission of the extended abstracts. This will be done by sending an email with the extended abstract as attachment to iris.grabemann@gkss.de (see the submission site for further information). All those who are going to participate in the conference without presenting anything, do also need to register by sending an informal email to iris.grabemann@gkss.de.

The PECS'02 organisers are looking forward to your extended abstracts.

Kind regards,

Hans Burchard.
